Environmental Studies: Expanding Opportunities in Urbanization and Technology
Urbanization has placed the environment at significant risk, prompting the increased use of technology to mitigate these challenges. This evolving scenario has opened up new career prospects, with technology universities rising to meet the growing demand. In addition to offering degrees in CSE, EEE, and Mechanical Engineering, many technology universities are now introducing undergraduate and advanced institutional programs in environmental science and management.
Several universities are offering environmental science courses under dedicated institutes and faculties. Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) provides postgraduate opportunities in Environmental Science and Engineering. Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) features a Forestry and Environmental Science Department. Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) has established an Institute of Energy and Environmental Studies, while also housing a Forestry Science and Technology Institute. Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) offers a department in Environment and Power Technology. Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University includes a Department of Environmental Science and Resource Management. Similarly, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) hosts a center for research in Environmental Science and Engineering. The Bangladesh University of Business and Technology features a Department of Environment and Development Economics, while Pabna University of Science and Technology offers courses under the Faculty of Life and Earth Science.
Graduates from these programs are finding opportunities in various government ministries, where environmental cells are being established. These positions are increasingly requiring expertise in environmental studies. Semi-government and autonomous organizations, such as city corporations and municipalities, are hiring environmental science graduates to assess environmental risks for residential, commercial, and development projects. Furthermore, numerous INGOs, particularly United Nations organizations, are actively engaging in environment-related projects. This growing field offers promising opportunities for those seeking a challenging and impactful career.
